History
The Institute of Physics of Advanced Materials was founded in 1995 as an organization department of Ufa State Aviation Technical University.
The research at the Institute is focused on the development of bulk nanostructured materials for advanced applications using severe plastic deformation.
Processing of ultrafine-grained and nanostructured metals and alloys by SPD techniques was pioneered by Prof. R.Z. Valiev and co-workers in the early 1990s. The most developed SPD processing methods are high-pressure torsion (HPT) and equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP). Due to top-level publications of the Institute's researchers in this area, nanocrystalline materials fabricated by SPD methods have become a new world-wide recognized field of NanoScience and Technology.

At present the Institute conducts investigations in the field of physics and mechanics of severe plastic deformation, development of SPD processing methods, fundamental studies of the structure, mechanical and functional properties and performance of SPD processed nanocrystals. Practical application of bulk nanostructured materials in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Medicine is of special importance. These activities are performed together with other subdivisions of the University and in close cooperation with Russian and international research centers.
The Institute possesses unique facilities: original die-sets fo
r high pressure torsion and equal-channel angular pressing, hydraulic presses with capacities of 100, 150, 250 and 1000 tons, vacuum chambers for powder compaction, transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffractometers, differential scanning calorimeter, microhardness measuring systems, mechanical testing machines and other instruments.
The Institute successfully combines research and academic activities, provides students with theatre for practical training to prepare their term and graduation projects. The Institute welcomes trainees from other universities and breeds its own postgraduates.
