In the third decade of September Ufa was the meeting point of the leading specialists in the sphere of nanotechnologies from 26 countries of the world. The Congress on Nanotechnologies was held in Ufa on September 22-26, 2009. It comprised the 2nd international symposium “Bulk nanostructured materials: from fundamentals to innovations. BNM-2009”, the international conference for young scientists with the elements of scientific school “Nanomaterials and Nanotechnologies in Metallurgy and Materials Science”, a set of round tables and the first specialized exhibition of high technologies.
The organizers of the events were the Government of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Ministry of industry and external economic relations of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Academy of Science of the Republic of Bashkortostan, and Ufa State Aviation Technical University in cooperation with “NanoMeT” Ltd. The motto of the Congress was “From fundamentals to innovations”. The forum was aimed at promotion of the development of innovational processes, scientific and technical and business cooperation, manufacturing of high-quality and competitive products. The 2nd international symposium “Bulk nanostructured materials: from fundamentals to innovations. BNM-2009” was one of the key events of the Congress on Nanotechnologies.
275 scientists took part in the symposium. They represented 26 countries: Russia, Germany, USA, Japan, China, Austria, Turkey, Brazil, Poland, Czech Republic, Iran, UK, Ukraine, India, Hungary, Slovakia, Italy, Spain, France, Switzerland, Australia, Belgium, Norway, Canada, Taiwan, and Portugal. Russia was represented by 200 participants; representatives from Ufa universities and research centers were among them. It should be noted that the unique peculiarity of this event was participation of representatives from almost all laboratories in the world, working in this theme.
Participation of foreign scientists in BNM-2009

Interest in the processing of bulk nanostructured materials is continuing to grow around the world to the extent that processing by severe plastic deformation (SPD) has now become of major importance in the field of materials science. This BNM-2009 symposium followed on from an earlier successful symposium (BNM-2007) held in Ufa on 14-18 August 2007. As previously, we were concerned with the problems of fundamental and applied research associated with bulk nanomaterials processing. The program of the conference was arranged with the following sessions: “Innovation Trends and Commercialization of Nanomaterials”, “Processing of Bulk Nanomaterials”, “Deformation Mechanisms”, “Microstructure Evolution and Nanostructuring”, “Physical and Mechanical Properties”, “Modeling of Nanostructured Materials and Texture Analysis”. In addition in frames of the symposium, the international conference for young scientists with the elements of scientific school “Nanomaterials and Nanotechnologies in Metallurgy and Materials Science” and a special session for participants of ISTC projects were organized. The symposium was co-organized by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, the Academy of Sciences of the Bashkortostan Republic, the International Science and Technology Center (Moscow) and the Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies RUSNANO. The international conference for young scientists with the elements of scientific school “Nanomaterials and Nanotechnologies in Metallurgy and Materials Science” was co-organized by the Federal Agency for Science and Innovations. The symposium marks that research in the field of bulk nanomaterials (BNM), which started twenty years ago in Ufa, has now achieved wide international recognition and development. A broad geography of the conducted work, dynamics of the investigation growth, the highest ratings of scientific publications prove that the given subject is one of the most important trends of modern nanomaterials science and nanotechnologies. Recent discoveries of unique properties of bulk nanomaterials, novel deformation mechanisms and phase transformation turned to be the basis for further development and application of bulk nanomaterials as functional and structural materials of a new generation. The idea to pass from laboratory testing of bulk nanomaterials to their commercial application showed during the symposium in 2007 was successfully proved at the Innovative session in 2009. Successful innovative elaborations for application of nanostructured Ti in medicine and machinery, use of nanomaterials in sport and everyday life and many other things were shown during the symposium. A fundamental contribution of Russian scientists and specialists in these elaborations was noted at the symposium. The symposium participants stressed a high international scientific and organizational level of the conducted event. The next BNM conference is scheduled for 2011. The precise date will be chosen by the organizing committee by the end of 2009.
